After using my Google home for a while, using it several times in the day I wondered: Why does it keep disconnecting from Wi-Fi?
And after doing some research, I’ve found that it disconnects from Wi-Fi because it needs a good combination of bandwidth and a good router to be fully working. When the internet overloads, the need for Google home to get information from the web is a bit too much causing its disconnection. Google is aware of the problem and they released an update for your device.
But, if you already did that, perhaps the problem is even easier to solve.
Wi-Fi interference issues
This is a common mistake that can be fixed easily. Did you move your Google Home around your house to listen to music? Well, in this case, you are adding more objects between your smart speaker and your router decreasing the connection.
The Wi-Fi receiver on the Google Home isn’t even as strong as the one that your smartphone or laptop has. Perhaps in some places in your house, those devices can reach it, but for Google home would be harder.
As you can’t tell really if the connection is the problem, your best shot is to put it as close as possible to your Wi-Fi signal
Another possible problem is the interference produced by other devices. Some new smart home gadgets added to Wi-Fi could be potentially draining the connection of Google home.
If you added a smart home hub that uses a screen and your connection is already poor, it will take most of the network to give you constant updates on the weather and the news.
If this is the case, your best option is to make an upgrade on your internet plan and even start thinking about a stronger router.
Because as you build your smart house, your Wi-Fi connection will suffer.
I get it, the best smart home devices run with Wi-Fi! but if your smart house is growing you may need to think about using Z-Wave as an alternative
If you built your smart house using Wi-Fi you’re going to experience this kind of problem. Some devices use stronger Wi-Fi receivers that it just drains the life of your Wi-Fi, and if at home your streaming Netflix at 4k on two TVs, for sure Google Home will disconnect regularly.
The cold hard truth: Scheduled obsolescence
Because this is one of the biggest problems that we encounter with technology. Most devices nowadays aren’t built to last and it’s a reality.
Perhaps your reliable google home has lost connection capabilities because of its age. After time passes is normal to expect to see this kind of behavior
And, well, in the end, we find an excuse to buy another beautiful google home for ourselves and other rooms!
But if you don’t know what Scheduled obsolescence is, allow me to explain it:
Any tech company designs their devices to only last a certain amount of time. Depending on the market and other things, an electronic device’s life is shortened so you have to buy another one more frequently.
And if you have tried all possible solutions to fix your precious Google Home, think about it a little bit.
For example, Apple and Samsung have been involved in this kind of problem in the past!
They were sued for millions of dollars and force them to correct their designs because they weren’t thinking about the customer in the first place.
I’m not saying Google devices aren’t part of this, but perhaps it’s time to evaluate to replace your old Google Home for a new one.
Your internet provider keeps disconnecting your google home from Wi-Fi
Another common reason why your google home keeps disconnecting from Wi-Fi.
If your internet company is experiencing interference issues you are going to be troubleshooting your google home for a long time without thinking about this!!
Make sure that your Wi-Fi is working at its 100% before starting to mess up with your Google Home
One cool trick I like to use is to go to fast.com
That website that is Netflix based tests my internet speed with the nearest server around my area giving me the information that I need right away.
But before using it you should know a few things:
- You have to test your internet speed connection with a relatively good device otherwise it will give your false information: Because, at least in the U.S. internet is super-fast with optic fiber, and maybe your devices can’t keep up with it! I’ve experienced that a couple of times and I even thought I was being scammed.
- If after running the test with a good device, the speed is below what you bought, your provider is experiencing problems.
Try to contact them just to make sure that’s a problem that is taking care of.
In case it repeats too frequently, think about changing your subscription
What to do if your google home keeps disconnecting from wifi
As mentioned above, the fact that your google home keeps disconnecting from Wi-Fi depends on numerous factors.
If you already checked all the boxes on your troubleshooting, you could start using the old methods.
- First, restart your router and wait that the connection establishes again. It may take a minute or more.
- Check the speed and the connection on your smartphone.
- Later, restart your Google Home. Let it sit turned off for a couple of minutes.
- If it doesn’t work, your best shot would be to do a hard reset. There is a good guide you can use for it. Click here
- Puls, a U.S. company focused on fixing tech devices reported from their users an update that it needs to be done to fix Wi-Fi and even a Bluetooth. Make sure your Google Home has it.
- In Case you’re not tech-savvy, or just don’t remember how to update it use Google support guide
- If you follow thoroughly this article, your Google Home will stop disconnecting from Wi-Fi
