When I thought about if the Ecobee smart is a learning thermostat, I wondered if it had all the attributes to be a rightful contender to NEST.
Having the ability to learn your temperature schedule in a smart thermostat is an incredible feature that supercharges the experience of your smart home
Since its first release, Ecobee in its latest model known as “Ecobee Smart” has put in a lot of effort to make it the flagship in the industry, but the skill to learn every temperature adjustment you do on it, sadly it is not integrated yet.
But it doesn’t mean that the Ecobee smart is falling behind compared to all the thermostats in the market.
Let me tell you that even though it doesn’t have the learning skill, Ecobee leads the smart cooling technology way better than Nest.
And Why? Well, for starters, it has so many more functionalities and overall a better-built quality that it just makes it the better choice among the others.
In the following article, we will know exactly why the Ecobee smart thermostat doesn’t need to learn your temperature schedule your whole week to be the best on in the market
Ecobee smart sensor
What is a smart sensor on and dumb thermostat? You could think that right?
Well, if you’re interested stick with me because it gets better
A Smart sensor works in your smart home to give you accurate data of the temperature on nearly any room you desired
Depending on your house’s location, time of the year, the weather outside, how many windows each room has, how big are they, the amount of furniture inside the room, and a huge bigger list of factors
The temperature in each room varies significantly compromising comfort and even wasting money on your electricity bill.
And the Ecobee smart thermostat has it included in the package.
It made such a crucial difference against the competency, that even NEST had to add it to their thermostat because it provided so much value that it was hard to avoid.
But and here is a big one, if you want this sensor with your NEST learning thermostat, you are going to buy it additionally.
And also, you can only pair 6 sensors to your nest thermostat, compared with the Ecobee that can control up to 32!
Just think about your house for a little bit.
If you have rooms where people don’t spend most of the time, why do you need to be blasting your air conditioning system to reach that room?
Or yeah, you could reduce the temperature manually on your Nest Thermostat,
But, after a while, that room that was empty it wasn’t anymore and you just need to raise the temperature manually again and again.
With this sensor, it will automatically detect if there is someone inside the room and adjust the temperature by itself.
Pretty smart huh?
Well, this awesome feature doesn’t come with the sensor that Nest offers.
It only measures temperature but not vacancy status or anything like that
Ecobee data reports
Besides being a super cool gadget for your smart home
Any smart thermostat is marketed with the promise of reducing your electricity bills
And they do!
But here’s the thing, Ecobee has done an enormous job creating a well displayed Data reports for you to know if you are reducing energy consumption
It saves 18 months of any kind of movement you perform on it and in the smart sensors
It compares how much energy are you saving with all the neighbors that have one
And even gives you tips to improve your savings!
Compared to Nest Learning thermostat, you won’t have so many data feedback or suggestions to help you optimize the way you wanted
If you don’t want to be tweaking your smart thermostat, that’s okay!
But it’s nice to know how good it is performing and understand how it works.
At least for me, I love to be checking that kind of information!
Voice control
In my case, I love to control any kind of smart device in my house through my voice assistant.
It just adds a futuristic touch that I can’t avoid
Which is another plus for the Ecobee Smart thermostat on this matter.
Nest sadly for many iPhone users, which is the huge majority of smartphone users in the U.S. can’t control their devices using Siri!
And from Apple insider, it probably won’t work ever with it!
Compared to Ecobee, you can control it with:
- Google Assistant
- Siri
- Alexa
The best and most known Voice Assistants that rule the smart home market.
In case you didn’t know, you can use your smart thermostat as a voice assistant!
It’s not only to use it with your smartphone or speaker.
You can talk to it and ask things like
Alexa, call mom
Ecobee newest feature: Eco+
Staying ahead in technology is one of the reasons why I love to be living in this new era.
Ecobee has just made their smart thermostats a little bit smarter with a free update!
ECO+ is an upgrade that will supercharge the experience of your thermostat by keeping in mind lots of cool features.
For instance, they added a mode to change how you can save energy.
From level 1 to 5, you can choose how important is to you to save energy daily!
Depending on where you live, Ecobee will record energy costs and adjust your thermostat depending on the values
Energy prices go up and down depending on tons of factors.
I know this because I’m an engineer. Without going too deep into this, depending on the type of the electrical station, the energy costs vary a lot!
If in your state, the energy company use water to generate energy
If there is a dry season, the energy cost will increase by a lot!
And that’s just a little example. The most common energy generating method is burning fuel.
And oil prices vary a lot too!
With the Eco+ feature, your smart thermostat will take into account these variations and change the energy consumption
In my opinion, this is the most relevant feature of the update. If you want to know all of them, go here for the full breakdown
Smart Recovery
Haven’t you heard about this cool feature?
Well, this one is for the power user.
Depending on how long it takes your home to cool or heat, the Ecobee Smart Thermostat learns these patterns
Knowing this, it will give you the perfect temperature at the perfect time without blasting your air conditioner to its peak!
Because after a thorough investigation, the air conditioner consumes the biggest amount of energy in the first minutes of operation!
Know how to properly adjust this, for sure is going to save you a couple of bucks
Conclusion
As you probably already know, Ecobee doesn’t learn your cooling and heating patterns, but in a way, it has learning skills that are better and more useful in my opinion.
Ecobee has designed an awesome smart thermostat with data reports that is incredibly more useful and thorough compared to Nest
