A Z-Wave temperature sensor is an unseen category for the Z-Wave market that can be tricky to find and get them running.
But in this guide, we’ll dive into a clever list where you can learn which sensors suit better your needs.
Z-wave Temperature sensor: Inovelli 4 in 1 sensor
This is a fantastic solution if you want to measure intelligently temperature, humidity, light, and motion in a nice tight package.
Inovelli is an ever-evolving smart home company born in Michigan with an awesome background in the industry focused mainly on providing smart devices within a budget.
It is designed for Smarthings mainly because you can pair it directly to the App following some simple steps.
In fact, it has a cool feature called SmartStart, which allows the sensor to be added to your Z-wave Network through a QR code so you can add it more quickly.
Sometimes waiting to the hub to detect it can be slow. Using SmartStart is a game-changer.
Directly from your Smartphone, you can see the results of each sensor
Temperature and humidity, the ones we are valuing the most, come together to so you can check it out.
Perhaps after pairing it, you would need to calibrate it to see optimal measurements but that’s about it! Pretty simple to use with a ton of information
Speaking about compatibility with Smart Home Hubs, it works with:
- SmarThings
- Hubitat
- Wink
- Vera
- Home Assistant
- HomeSeer
And way more!! As it works with Z-Wave it lets you pair it nearly with any type of hub have.
If you are new in the Smart Home World, you could think:
Is the Inovelli z-wave temperature sensor compatible with Alexa or Google home?
And the answer to this is: it depends. Because you won’t be able to control it directly with your preferred voice assistant if you don’t own a Smart Home Hub previously that has the smart speaker integration.
So if you own a good Smart Home Hub, you could trigger routines through your voice that will send an order to the sensor. But directly from your smart speaker to your sensor, is definitely not possible.
Aeotec Multisensor 6
Another beautiful tidy package with tons of awesome sensors for you to automate your house the Z-way Style.
Because besides being the best Z-wave temperature sensor that you could find out there, it comes with:
- Motion detection
- Temperature sensor
- Light detection
- Humidity
- Vibration: Yes, it detects vibration!
- UV Sensor: This is a super interesting one
This little fellow goes far beyond just reading temperature. It comes with so many features that it expands all the incredible ideas that you could have in your home!
But what about the size? I was thinking about a normal z-wave temperature sensor that I could fit in my house without intervening with my decorations!
Well, this sensor is 42mm height or 1.65 inches with an awesome design that it really gives a new perception of your house whenever you decide to put it.
I wanted to speak a little bit about the UV sensor that comes with this one.
If you have a smart blind at home, and your house receives too much light from the sun in the afternoon you could create a routine to once the sensor detects way to much UV light inside, close the blind and protect your furnace from being damaged!
Awesome
And you can start letting your imagination go crazy with all these sensors.
Batteries and power
The battery lasts two years according to the manufacturer and is because it runs with Z-Wave technology. Super-efficient and reliable.
But in case you don’t want to be changing batteries and you just want to have a fully automated home without worries, Aeotec thought about that too!
Just connect it to the USB and the charger, and you’re good to go! This will mean that the sensor won’t lose power detection over time and the device will run smoothly all. The. Time.
Take your home to the Next Level
Besides reading your temperature, this multi-sensor can control your house on a whole new level
Why? Because you can start making routines based on all the data that it measures.
Movement, UV control on your furniture, Humidity. Just think about it, our smart home will expand by far!
And yeah, the sensors work great but, are they accurate?
Aeotec has gathered a bunch of nerdy engineers to calibrate it as precise as possible, but, if you want to have certain configurations you can change the measurement as you like
In the Z-Wave front, this multi-sensor has a chip called 500 series.
And what the heck that means? Well, it means that it will have a 67% more wireless range and a 250% faster communication.
Z-wave is the best network to automate your house right now, and with this kind of processor on your z-wave temperature sensor, you will transform it into a stronger one!
And last but not least, what about compatibility? I already have a smart home hub but I’m not sure if it will fit in with mine!
On the Aeotec gateway checker, you can check if your not-so-known hub can run with it!
Z-wave temperature sensor: Aeotec TriSensor
Aeotec just hit another home run with this z-wave temperature sensor.
You can control your environment so easily with this, that they have implemented two more sensors in it to expand the possibilities!
Light, temperature, and motion are the perfect combo for this small and tidy package.
Because besides having very accurate readings for your temperature, you could control your environment with more data and make your home super smart!
For example, if any room of yours gets too hot and too much light is going inside busting your furniture, you could close your window shades using a smart device!
Or if for example, if you want to have the perfect amount of light in your house measured in numbers, the Light sensor will be a good way to do it.
It comes with the 500 series chip. With it, your Z-Wave network will be 2.5 times faster than regular Z-wave and it will increase the wireless range about 67% more.
This translates into a stronger smart home network, and overall, more reliable.
Another great idea that you could use for the extra sensor would be if you own a smart camera.
Sometimes, the footage isn’t as clear as we would want it, and it’s because the resolution of the lens at night is not enough for a good view.
Having the tri-sensor as Aeotec call it, you could create a routine where once your camera starts recording a certain event, the light will turn on just enough to capture good footage of what’s happening without altering the intruder!
And the ideas are just endless.
For the Temperature sensor, we can expect around 1 degree of accuracy on the readings. I think that’s pretty good for the use that we are going to do it.
But, hey, I just want to measure temperature and the aeotec multi-sensor it just has more features! What could be a breaking point between these two?
The biggest differences are three things:
- Z-Wave S2 technology: The z-wave temperature sensor has this update into their features to make z-wave more secure.
- Size: it’s a little bit smaller which will allow you to locate easier on your certain parts of your house
- Price: it’s less of course which could be a dealbreaker for you or not.
Sensative strip sensor: Precise temperature and light readings
A stylish z-wave temperature sensor capable of communicating with multiple smart devices to let you control your house the way you want it!
If you automated your AC with a smart thermostat or you just transformed your regular ceiling fan to a smart one, you could create routines to activate them!
Dropping down the temperature with a simple click
Designed for outdoors and indoors, the Sensative sensor has a super-thin design (3mm or 0.11 in) that is very easy to fit in with your house’ ambiance
With incredible 10-year battery life, this sensor is the one to set it and forget it.
Without installing a cable, this z-wave temperature sensor has the longest battery life right now in the market
Besides reading temperature, it comes with a light sensor. A smart device that only measures temperature with Z-wave technology is hard to find, but I guess there’s no harm in having more data for your home right?
Does the sensitive strip sensor work with Alexa?
If you pair it with a Smart Home Hub and you control it through Alexa you could know a temperature’s room. But, directly, any type of echo devices can’t be connected to it
Zooz alarm and Z-wave temperature sensor
Another great finding for reading the temperature.
Besides reading the temperature, it can measure humidity and activate and very loud alarm!
This one comes with Z-Wave S2 which is a security protocol to make your smart home network even safer
It works with Smarthings as you may expect, but a word of advice, for the sensors your Hub needs to support multi-sensor level commands
It can resist cold and hot temperatures (14-104° F), but I wouldn’t install it outside. Humidity and direct sunlight will destroy it in no time
Speaking about the alarm, there are a couple of things to share:
- It doesn’t work with Wink, Ring, ADT or other regular alarm panels
- If you want additional functionality for both the alarm and the sensors, on Smarthings you would need a custom device handler
It has a gorgeous design letting you install it anywhere you want.
Below it has a ring that lights every time is working which is sharp
From what I can tell, if you operate the sensor regularly, the batteries will dry out super-fast. So be aware of that.
Conclusion
Having a Z-wave temperature sensor at home is a fantastic idea to control your climate through your smart blinds, ceiling fans and all sorts of cool gadgets
And with all the improvement these devices have gotten since its release you will get a ton of more features allowing you to transform your house in the palace you deserve!
