Google Nest is a fantastic system, but like any other device, it can sometimes run into problems.
A Nest system that goes offline intermittently is one of the most common issues. If this is happening to you, there are a few possible reasons.
Google Nest systems may go offline due to system downtime, outdated app, devices near routers causing signal loss, or internet connection issues. To fix, check system status, update app, ensure proper wiring, move interfering devices, or restart the router. Contact support if none of this worked
This article will explore why Google Nest keeps going offline and the steps you can take to resolve the issue. Keep reading to learn more.
1. The Google Nest System Is Down
Like any other app, the Google Nest app sometimes has downtime for various reasons.
System downtimes can be planned or unplanned, but the result is usually the same — your Nest system stops working for a while.
On the bright side, planned downtimes typically last for much less time.
Unplanned downtime is usually caused by bugs or server problems and usually takes longer to solve.
It can last until the developer ships an update to your device.
How To Fix
You can check Nest’s system status online to see if all the functions are working correctly.
The website will provide information if Nest is experiencing a degradation, an outage, or connectivity issues.
If your Nest is not working and there’s an outage, there’s not much else you can do but wait for them to resolve the issue.
2. Your Nest App Is Outdated
As with any other app, if your Nest app is outdated, it might not work as it should and could end up crashing every time you use it.
Developers usually consider compatibility with recent versions of the software when pushing new updates, but if you’re outdated by a few months, it can cause problems.
How To Fix
You have to check the Apple App Store or Google Play Store to see if the Nest app on your smartphone or tablet has the latest version. Update the app if necessary.
To update your Nest app on your Android phone or tablet:
- Open the Google Play Store app.
- Tap the profile icon at the top right portion of the app.
- Select Manage apps & device. You will see an “Update available” label on the screen if there are available updates.
- Tap Update or Update all.
To update your Nest app on your iPhone or iPad:
- Open the App Store
- Tap the profile icon at the top right portion of the app.
- Scroll to the update for your Nest, then select Update or Update All.
3. The Battery of Your Nest Thermostat Is Running Low
Your Nest app can go offline if the battery is running low, and keeping your device sufficiently charged is key to keeping it online.
If you notice that your Nest thermostat has a dark screen, a low power indicator present on the screen, or it does not turn on, its battery may be running out of power.
How To Fix
Remove the Nest thermostat from its base, and you will notice a USB charging port (a micro-USB or a USB Type C port, depending on the model) on the back of the thermostat.
You should be able to charge it like any other mobile device.
The charging time usually lasts between eight to ten hours. Return the thermostat to its base, and it should work fine.
If the device has been fully charged yet hasn’t been operating, you have to check if the red or blue wire at the base of your Nest thermostat is supplying current.
That wire is connected to your house’s HVAC and electrical system and should charge your Nest thermostat.
Here is a YouTube video for more information about the wiring in your Nest thermostat:
You may also have to check if the battery behind the thermostat display is installed correctly. Here are the steps to take if you need to replace the batteries:
- Pull the thermostat off its base.
- Remove the old batteries from the back of the device.
- Insert the new batteries.
- Return the thermostat to its base.
4. There Are Other Devices Near Your Wi-Fi Router
Your Nest thermostat may receive a low Wi-Fi signal strength if other electronic devices that require an Internet connection, like cordless phones, alarm systems, or smart locks, are placed near the Wi-Fi router. Wireless devices using Bluetooth can also interfere with the Wi-Fi signal strength.
How To Fix
If your Nest thermostat keeps going offline due to poor Wi-Fi signal strength, you should move your router away from other devices that can interfere with its signal strength.
This includes things like TVs and Microwaves.
5. No Internet Connection
Suppose the Google Nest system is working fine, you have the most current version of the Nest app, nothing obstructs the Wi-Fi signal, and the battery of your Nest thermostat is at a healthy level.
In this case, there might be a problem with your Internet connection.
How To Fix
Try restarting your Wi-Fi router to resolve the internet connection issue.
You can turn the router off or unplug the power cable for 30 to 60 seconds.
Turn it on or plug it back in to check if the issue has been resolved.
You may also want to consider restarting your Nest thermostat. Here are the steps to follow:
- Press the thermostat ring to open the quick-view menu.
- Open the settings menu.
- Select Reset and press the thermostat ring.
You can manually configure the Nest thermostat to look for your home Wi-Fi connection once you reset the device.

To prevent your Google Nest from going offline, ensure that your Nest thermostat has a healthy battery level and you’re using the latest version of the Nest app.
You should also ensure your Wi-Fi router is properly connected.
