If not, this title would seem crazy.

But despite the cool looking terms used there, it’s not that hard as you think

Essentially, to run a cool smart home without delays and with a lot of versatile features, you would need a brain to control everything around it right?

And in the past, your smartphone was responsible for controlling most of the gadgets where you needed to install an app for every single one of them!

And in my experience, it is not sustainable if you keep adding more of them with the pass of time!

I find myself quite often thinking about how can I automate nearly everything at home!

That’s why I decided to get a brain for my smart home, where I can control every gadget in only one app! Which is super practical and it even expanded the ways I was automating common chores.

It has helped also to let many devices from different brands and technologies gather into one cool system where I’m in control of every single one of its features!

It has been super helpful for my smart home and if you want to connect your smart thermostat to your existing Ring system, my best advice is to get one ASAP.

For an affordable price, you are taking a huge step in your smart home efforts.

Now, there is a boatload of smart home hubs A.K.A. brain of your IoT house in the market! But I’ve found that this one has more than anything you could possibly need. Check it out.

Which smart thermostat then works best with Ring and my new brain?

After digging a little more into the Ring system, I’ve found that they gathered a cool list of all the devices that are compatible with its system, but none of them were a Smart Thermostat.

So even though we already knew it, I wanted to tell you with facts, so you don’t feel that I don’t know what I’m talking about.

Now, to answer the above question, we need to dig a little bit into your desires for your smart home.

Because as you might know, there are a lot of smart thermostats in the market!

They come with z-wave technology, Wi-Fi, wired, etc.

But again, after reviewing numerous smart thermostats and checking how they behave on normal conditions I think your safest bet would be an Ecobee.

And why is that? Because it’s the best smart thermostat right now in the market! Nest has developed a super cool one too but is not as smart as the ecobee for numerous reasons.

It is a very complicated topic that requires a lot of reviews and energy put into it! That’s why if you want to see it for yourself, check out this post to see them competing!

As long as you take the proper brain for your smart home, it shouldn’t be a problem

Connecting the IoT brain with your Smart Thermostat

Okay, but how is possible to connect your smart thermostat to a ring system?

I mean, you even showed us that Ring gathered a list where there wasn’t any smart thermostat in it!

You’re bluffing!

Well.. that’s the beauty of smart home tech right?

Let me introduce you quickly to a concept not so familiar, at least to many beginners!

It’s called IFTTT:

IFTTT in common and simple words is a way to connect devices to perform routines without any kind of limitations.

IThis Then That allows you to connect many devices in a sequence to trigger any desired automation you would want!

And if you choose the right smart home hub, it’s probably going to be compatible with any type of smart thermostat in the market.

In this case, we are going to do it with an Ecobee smart thermostat:

  1. Let us assume you already have it running on your home. In case you just got it, please follow this guide from Ecobee where it’s broken down step-by-step Now, you need to have the SmartThings App up and running on your phone. If you just got your SmartThings Hub, you should follow the steps on the SmartThings Website here. Inside the box of your hub, there is the step-by-step process in case you have trouble with something.

Note: I find it awesome to install these devices and follow steps because that’s how technology is now! And After a time it gets easier and easier…

  1. Once both the thermostat and smartThings app is running, open it and go to Marketplace.
  2. Tap on Thermostats
  3. Choose Ecobee 4 Smart Thermostat.
  4. Click on Connect now.
  5. Tap on credentials.
  6. Log in with your Ecobee Smart Thermostat user and password. You set It up at the beginning of this guide.
  7. Authorize SmartThings
  8. You’re connected!
  9. Now you need to set up your motion sensors. Add them and your good to go.

Now cool we have successfully added our Ecobee smart thermostat to our SmartThings App and hub. The process is pretty much the same if you already own a Nest thermostat, just make sure it says connected at the end of the process.

The app is super friendly. What you need to do now is to connect your ring devices to SmartThings as well.

Let’s say you own a Ring doorbell as an example, but generally speaking, the process is going to be the same:

  1. Set up a Ring Account. If you have it up and running you can skip this step.
  2. Follow the manual of your Ring doorbell for the installation. If you have it up and running you can skip this step.
  3. Now, Open the SmartThings App again and press ‘+’
  4. Select Ring, doorbell.
  5. Choose device’s location
  6. Select room’s gadget
  7. Tap and write your user and ring password. I know, sometimes there are too many users and passwords, ugh
  8. Next and authorize
  9. Now you’re done!

As you can see, now you have both devices running to your smartThings hub! Now it’s time to use IFTTT to take on your automation dreams to a whole new level!

For example, one cool trick that you could use is to convert an indoor camera into a motion sensor for your Smart Thermostat.

Using IFTTT once your Ring indoor camera detects movement in your living room for quite a long time, you can make the thermostat to change the temperature to cool down the room!

Conclusion

Does any smart thermostat work with Ring? Yes! As long as you create a gateway between Ring and nearly any kind of smart thermostat, you can connect them and even create cool automation.

Even though Ring has its own platform, it doesn’t mean that you can play with it to your needs.

Sometimes companies create their own scenarios to help customers with the gadget integration… but hey! Human imagination is always finding new ways to make our lives better at home

And with this awesome guide, I believe, you can connect any kind of Ring device to any type of smart thermostat
