Why Do Your Smart Bulbs Keep Disconnecting? 5 Cool Tips

Smart devices are great to have in your home to make your life easier, and one of the most common is the smart bulb.

With smart bulbs, you can turn on your lights from your phone or with your voice, as long as they don’t get disconnected.

But why do your smart bulbs keep disconnecting?

Your smart bulbs might keep disconnecting if your WiFi signal is weak or your power goes out. To fix the issue, try resetting them automatically and manually. Also, check your WiFi speed and strength, and make sure there’s power to the outlet you’re using and no timer set.

This article explains a few common reasons why your smart bulbs keep getting disconnected and five ways to fix your disconnected smart bulbs.

Reasons Smart Bulbs Disconnect

It can be frustrating when your smart bulbs disconnect, and there are a few reasons for this.

The most common reason your smart bulbs keep disconnecting is that your WiFi signal isn’t strong enough.

Either your smart lights aren’t close enough to your WiFi signal, or the signal isn’t strong enough for you to use your smart lights.

To stop them from disconnecting, make sure you’re not overloading your WiFi with too many smart devices.

Another reason your smart bulbs get disconnected is that your power outlet isn’t working.

If your outlet isn’t getting any power, your smart bulbs will get disconnected, and you won’t be able to turn them on.

You might also have a power outage that disconnects your smart bulbs.

If you have a power outage, your smart bulbs may not automatically reconnect when everything turns back on.

If that happens, you need to wait until your power is back on and your WiFi reconnects before you can retry connecting your smart bulbs.

5 Fixes for Disconnected Smart Bulbs

Now that you know the common reasons why smart bulbs disconnect let’s talk about the five easy ways to fix your disconnected smart bulbs.

1. Automatically Reset the Bulb Through an App

Try resetting your smart bulbs first, which you can do through an app (the app you use depends on the brand of your smart bulbs).

There should be an option to reset the bulbs in your app, but you can check your instruction manual if you can’t find it.

When the smart bulbs reconnect, you need to watch for the bulb to light up or flash, which signals that it’s reconnecting.

You can try this a few times, as sometimes it takes a few tries to reset your smart bulbs successfully.

2. Manually Reset the Bulb

If you can’t use an app to reset your bulbs, you can try a manual reset.

The manual resets also vary depending on the bulb type, but in general, you just need to turn it off with the light switch and let it stay off for ten seconds or so.

Then, turn the lights back on and see if they reconnect.

If it doesn’t work on the first try, do it a few more times.

CNET has a list of common smart bulbs and how you can manually reset them.

3. Check Your WiFi Strength

Another way you can try to fix your disconnected smart bulbs is to check the strength of your wifi.

The WiFi signal strength you need depends on how many devices you have connected to it, including smartphones, TVs, computers, and smart devices, including smart bulbs.

Furthermore, you need to make sure that the gigahertz of your network is suitable to work with smart devices.

Sometimes, smart devices will only work on 2.4 gigahertz networks, not anything higher, like a common five gigahertz network.

If your WiFi isn’t working and you’re unable to connect your smart bulbs, try restarting your WiFi and trying to reconnect the smart bulbs after it turns back on.

4. Make Sure Your Power Outlet Is Working

Another way to fix the issue is to ensure that there’s power getting to your outlet.

You should unplug your light and try plugging something else in.

If the other thing works, then the outlet isn’t the issue.

But if your other device doesn’t turn on, then the power outlet needs to be fixed.

Additionally, make sure there’s power to the outlet from your electric box.

If the power’s on, you need to reset the outlet to make it work again.

If you can’t get it to work, or you don’t want to reset it, but you want to use your smart bulb, you need to plug it into a different outlet.

Once it’s plugged into a working outlet, you’ll be able to reconnect it, and it should work again.

Also, check to make sure there are no light switches that are turned off, which could prevent your smart bulbs from turning on and connecting.

5. Check the Timer on Your Smart Bulbs

Finally, you should check to ensure that your smart bulbs aren’t on a timer.

If you set a timer on your smart bulbs and it’s not time for them to be on, they won’t turn on, and you may think they’re disconnected.

Check your app to see if your smart bulbs are on a timer, and if they are, turn it off.

Then, reset the smart bulbs and see if they’re connected and working.

It’s common for them to be connected but not turned on, making you think they’re disconnected.

Your outlet might also be on a timer, which could disconnect the smart bulbs.

Make sure this isn’t the case either.

Final Thoughts

Smart bulbs are a nice accessory to have in your home.

However, they can get disconnected sometimes, but you shouldn’t worry if that happens.

There are multiple ways to fix the issue, including resetting the smart bulbs and checking your power.

If your power is out, an outlet isn’t working, or the outlet or bulb is on a timer, the smart bulbs won’t connect.

You also need to check your WiFi and make sure the speed is fast enough, and you’re not trying to use too many devices on your WiFi.
