How To Unlink Your Phone From Alexa (7 Easy Steps)

How To Unlink Your Phone From Alexa

Amazon’s Alexa can be a handy personal assistant, but you may not always want to have the device linked with your phone for a variety of reasons.

Fortunately, the process to unlink your phone from Alexa is pretty straightforward and can be easily accomplished by following these seven steps.

Here’s how to unlink your phone from Alexa in seven easy steps

  1. Open the Alexa app on your phone.
  2. Select “All Devices”.
  3. Tap on the phone you want to remove.
  4. Select “Settings” gear icon.
  5. Tap the trashcan icon.
  6. Select “Delete” on the confirmation screen.
  7. Double-check that you deleted the device successfully.

It will only take a few minutes to walk through these steps and permanently unlink your phone.

If you change your mind later on, you can always reconnect your phone to the Alexa app once again. Let’s get started!

1. Open the Alexa App on Your Phone

The process is fundamentally the same for unlinking both iPhones and Android phones, as well as any other smart devices that you may have connected to your Alexa.

The Alexa app controls all aspects of Alexa, including both adding and deleting devices.

Open the app by tapping the Alexa app on your phone’s home screen.

Depending on when you first added the Alexa app to your phone, you may need to swipe to a different home screen on your device to find the Alexa app.

When you first open the app, you’ll see the main home screen for the Alexa app itself.

All of the remaining steps will take place right inside the Alexa app.

2. Select “All Devices”

Next, you’ll want to tap on the button that says “All Devices.”

This will bring up a list of all the devices you have connected to any Alexa-enabled Amazon product, such as an Echo Dot or a Fire TV Stick.

This list can be long if you’ve added devices other than your phone or Amazon products to Alexa, such as:

  • Smart electrical plugs
  • Light bulbs
  • Tablets
  • Smartwatches
  • Smart TVs
  • Smart WiFi Extenders
  • Smart toys
  • Smart clocks
  • Door locks

Scroll through the list until you see the name of the phone that you want to unlink.

If you have lots of connected devices, take a moment to double-check that you’ve chosen the name of the device that you’re trying to unlink.

3. Tap on the Phone You Want To Remove

Once you’ve found the phone you want to unlink on the list of All Devices, you can select the phone just by tapping on its name.

This will pull up the selected device on the screen and show a brief overview of your phone’s information.

Make sure to review the information to confirm that you’re selecting the right device, as some phones can show up with generic names.

4. Select the “Settings” Gear Icon

Once you’ve opened up the submenu for your phone, the next step is to open the Settings menu.

You’ll do this by clicking on the gear icon located in the upper right-hand corner of the screen.

This will pull up all of the information about that phone and its connection to the Alexa app.

This submenu shows all of the settings for that specific device.

You’ll be able to see that the phone is connected via Wi-Fi and exactly which Wi-Fi network the phone is using.

You’ll also see the name of the device that you’ve selected, which is a great way to make sure once more that you’ve chosen the intended device to unlink.

5. Tap the Trashcan Icon

Next, you’ll want to tap the Trashcan icon that’s again located in the upper right-hand corner of the screen.

A dialogue window will open asking if you want to remove that device.

The name of the device will be listed along with the text: “This also removes it from all groups and routines.”

This is a reminder that by unlinking this device, you’ll also lose the ability to access any separate groups or routines that you previously set up within the Alexa app.

Below the text are two buttons: “Cancel” and “Delete.”

If, for some reason, you’ve changed your mind about unlinking your phone from Alexa, you can click the Cancel button to stop the entire process.

Clicking this button will take you back to the previous Settings screen.

6. Select “Delete” on the Confirmation Screen

If you’re ready to continue unlinking this phone from the Alexa app, then you can go ahead and click on the Delete button.

The Alexa app may take a few seconds to process this request.

Once the dialogue box disappears, you have completed the process, and your phone will no longer be connected to your Alexa app.

7. Double Check That the Device Was Deleted Successfully

The process of unlinking your phone from the Alexa app is pretty straightforward, but as with any electronic device, it’s always a good idea to make sure everything has gone through successfully.

You can check to see if you were successful in unlinking your phone by closing the Alexa app and then reopening it.

Navigate back to the “All Devices” page and scroll through all of the remaining connected devices to ensure your phone is no longer listed.

It’s very unlikely that this process won’t work the first time.

However, if there was some kind of technical glitch, you’ll know right away when you see the phone listed on the All Devices page.

If that happens, close the application out completely and then work through the steps again to unlink your phone.

Final Thoughts

Unlinking your phone from Alexa is very easy. By following these seven steps, you should be able to complete the process in just a few minutes.

Keep in mind that you can always reconnect your phone with Alexa in the future.

Although the device will be removed permanently from Alexa, you can reconnect it without a problem at a later time by following the steps to connect a new device.
