How To Disconnect Alexa From Your WiFi Network – Hassle-Free!

How To Disconnect Alexa From Your WiFi Network

Alexa is one of the most convenient devices in today’s home tech market.

However, you may have noticed that your voice assistant is being activated without you wanting it to be.

Alternatively, you might have set up a new WiFi and want to know how to disconnect your device from the old one; luckily, the process is fairly quick and straightforward.

Here’s how to disconnect Alexa from your WiFi network:

  1. Open your Alexa app or the Alexa site.
  2. Choose “Settings” in the menu on the left.
  3. Select “Device Settings” and choose your device.
  4. Click on the WiFi network to disconnect.
  5. If the WiFi network isn’t showing, rescan and tap it.

Although the Alexa voice assistant is an innovative helper, its sensitive speech recognition software means it can get set off quite a lot (Just imagine if you had a family member or a pet with the same name!).

You don’t want to keep telling Alexa over and over to stop listening to you or to cancel her responses! This guide is here to help you learn how to disconnect Alexa from your WiFi network easily.

1. Open Your Alexa App or the Alexa Site

Some Alexa-enabled devices, such as most Amazon Echo accessories, do not have a keyboard or a screen you can use to tinker with settings. (However, the Echo Spot and Echo Show do have screens, so you’ll be able to control your WiFi and other settings directly from the device if you’ve got one of these.)

If your Alexa device has no screen, you’ll need to access and change your WiFi settings through the Alexa app or website.

The steps in this article will allow you to disconnect Alexa from any device.

Firstly, open up the Alexa app on your smartphone or tablet.

Alternatively, you can go to the Amazon Alexa site in a computer browser. If prompted, sign in with your credentials.

2. Choose “Settings” in the Menu on the Left

Once you’ve entered your Amazon account details, you can access the navigation toolbar on the left.

In the menu that appears, you should see a “Settings” option. Click on that.

If you don’t have the Alexa app, I recommend downloading it.

The app allows you to manage your Alexa-enabled devices most easily.

You can also stay signed in, so you don’t need to re-enter your account details.

3. Select “Device Settings,” and Choose Your Device

In the “Settings” menu, there are a few different tabs that will pop up.

You should see the “Device Settings” option in the list. Tap on “Device Settings” in your Alexa app or click on it in the website menu.

After choosing “Device Settings,” another menu should open that shows all of your devices that use Alexa.

For example, your Echo or Dot accessories.

Find the device you want to disconnect from your WiFi and tap or click it.

4. Click on the WiFi Network To Disconnect

In the device menu, you should be able to see the name of your WiFi connection that your Alexa device is connected to.

To disconnect the device, tap or click on the WiFi network’s name.

Doing so should disconnect you from that network.

However, this process doesn’t always go as smoothly as you’d expect; as sometimes, it may take a few tries before finding the network name you’re looking for.

5. If the WiFi Network Isn’t Showing, Rescan and Tap It

Can’t see the WiFi network listed? To find it, you need to rescan and wait for the network to pop up under the device menu.

After it appears, you can then press or click on the WiFi’s name, and you should then have disconnected it from your Alexa device.

Your Alexa device needs to be close enough to your router to work the best.

If you can’t find the network listed, try moving your device closer to the router.

For example, according to Aplhr, the Echo Show needs to be “in a radius of approximately 20 feet (6 meters) from your router.

How To Disconnect Alexa From Your Echo Show

Unlike some other Amazon Echo devices, the Echo Show and Echo Dot have screens.

This means you can disconnect your WiFi straight from the device (rather than through the app or site).

To do this, follow these steps:

  1. Access the settings by saying “go to settings” (or similar) or by swiping down the top notification bar on your Echo Show and tapping the “Settings” icon (a gear icon).
  2. Once you’re in the “Settings” menu, tap on “Network.
  3. You see your WiFi network and be able to disconnect it by tapping on it.

How To Connect Alexa to a New WiFi Network

If you want to disconnect your Alexa-enabled device from your old network to connect it to a new router, the process is just as straightforward.

To connect your device to a new WiFi network, follow these steps:

  1. Open the Alexa app and select “Devices.”
  2. Tap on “Echo and Alexa” and the device.
  3. Tap on “Change” next to “WiFi Network.
  4. Enter your new network details.

Final Thoughts

Amazon’s Alexa is enabled on a wide variety of devices these days.

Although the device is exceptional for task management, playing music, and keeping in touch with people, it can get triggered unintentionally.

Depending on whether your Alexa device has a screen or not, you can either access the settings menu from the device or through the app or website.

By following the steps in this article, you can easily disconnect your Alexa device from its current WiFi.
