How to hide your smart camera quick and easy!

Introduction

One of the first issues that you encounter at the moment you get a Smart camera is the fact that is very easy to rob them.

After getting one, the best idea is to hide your Smart Camera. Usually, the best cameras are wireless and come with a magnetic base, turning them into an easy dish for a thief.

For example, in this video you can see clearly what I’m saying:

The owner was lucky enough finding him on the streets later and putting him under arrest, but for regular citizens like us, I wouldn’t expect to recover it that way.

Today we are going to share some of the easiest ways to cover your camera and protect it from theft in no time.

Guillie Skin: Hide your Smart Camera

smart camera

Designed to protect all Arlo Cameras except for Q and baby models. This camouflage is very easy to install and you just need to locate it on a tree for maximum stealth.

When I found it, my first doubt was if it was going to compromise video or connection capabilities. And no, internet connection would not be affected and it can protect the case and make your Smart Camera last longer!

A perfect choice for an outdoor position, once installed it’s going to blend better than a ninja at night.

 Aobelieve Weatherproof Birdhouse

smart camera

A creative Smart idea this birdhouse. It fits on all models except the baby monitor and Arlo Q. You just take the ceiling off, put your camera and that’s it!

If your house isn’t black (I hope it’s not because it would be weird) you can paint it to blend in better on your decoration.

Wi-Fi capabilities aren’t compromised by concealing this camera inside.

It is waterproof so it would be an extra layer of protection for this camera!
For the installation, you can get a base, but I would suggest to secure it with bolts to your desired location and save time and money.

Usually, Arlo Cameras have a wide field of view. You just need to make sure that your camera is covering a good area and then you can put it in place with bolts.

Some users have claimed that it can sustain a fall from 3ft with the camera inside, but I guess you don’t want to test it out, right?

Hairier camouflage skin for your Arlo HD friend

Smart camera

The perfect outdoor disguise.

This camouflage has longer threads to help you out hiding your base!

As seen on the image, you can put it inside a bush or a tree and it would be perfectly hidden in plain sight.

A quick solution for your camera location and it will give you footage and no one will even notice it!

This skin only works with the Arlo HD model. Other ones you will have to use a Ty-Rap with the same color.

Hide your Smart Camera in a dark place with a Skin

Skin

Sometimes I tend to overcomplicate stuff. A good hiding spot for your camera would be a dark place using black skin!

Under a roof eave or at the darker side of your porch, using a black skin for it is the easiest way to hide it.

A good position would be inside of your house pointing to the outside, if you have a window that faces to your main door, you can locate it to record everyone who is at your home and once they are on tape… there is no coming back!

Or even at the top of a tree… if there is a black branch somewhere there, you can easily secure it with a Ty-Rap and it will be hidden for any thief’s hands!

Flexible Twist Mount

Flexible mount

One of the issues that I found when hiding cameras at very high spots was the way to attach them. Depending on the model and the battery, you need to be re-charging your Smart Security Cameras very regularly.

If you have an Arlo camera that is hidden in a tree or at a fence like the image above, you may want to have a Flexible twist mount.

Just remove it from your perfect hiding spot, change the battery and put it back up in no time!

Using Ty-Raps to secure the camera could be a good idea also. But you will need pliers to cut them and having the bag around to re-install it, but using a twist mount would be easier and quicker to locate.

At some point, you may want to change your camera location. Perhaps you have found a great spot for surveillance, but some burglars have been studying your home for a while finding your blind spots!

It’s a good idea to change your camera’s position every once in a while.

When burglars are experts at breaking in, they study your house before attempting to come inside. I remember when I lived in Colombia, some random guys were lurking around the building.

At that moment, the outdoor surveillance cameras taped them. A couple of weeks later they broke in and steal three apartments!

How did they do it? They found the location of the cameras. Using hats to cover their faces it was impossible to identify them. That’s why is so important to hide your cameras and change the position regularly. And If you have this flexible mount, it’s just a matter of unwrapping it and that’s it!

How to hide your Smart camera inside your Home

As we covered the best and cheapest ways to hide your Home security camera outdoors it is time to do it on the inside.

Depending on the model, there are plenty of ideas for you to explore

But there is a disclaimer now. Don’t be creepy!

One of the best ways to hide your Smart Camera would be having in mind the concept of Hiding in plain sight

A concept used in war for snipers, it is the best way to fool any burglar coming inside.

When hiding the cameras, you need to keep in mind the possible ways for them to enter your home.

Maybe a window? Front door? Above the roof? This is very important because you can strategically locate them to record potential weak spots at home.

On regular or artificial Plants

Using the camouflage shown above, you can extend the trick to hide your camera on your plants. If it’s real, you may want to avoid putting water on top of the camera, right?

Book Shelves

Hide your smart camera between books! Using a Skin that blends in with the color of your shelf, it would be a great idea to hide it there.

If you own a baby monitor, dress it as a cute bunny

It comes as a puppy and a green bunny.

On any kind of enclosure

Do you have an old Teddy bear or a regular stuffed animal? You can easily put a camera inside and mix it up with your other left-behind kid’s toys. Just make sure nobody can reach them and they will be more protected.

What to avoid when you hide your Smart Camera

  • Avoid being too obvious! It sounds cheesy, but the fact that put “hide” your camera in a corner of your house just because it’s white, it won’t do better.
  • Zones where you leave common things like your car keys or near to places that have regular traffic. Sure, your front door needs to be within the camera’s view, but put it right where you leave your keys and wallet would be easier for everyone to spot it!
  • Discharging lights: If your Smart Camera is an Arlo, you will have an orange light blinking once it starts to discharges to warn you. But if some break in and see a light on a bookshelf your cover will be compromised! Just put a little piece of electric tape on top of it and you’re good to go.
  • Avoid spending too much time on hiding your cameras: I give you some ideas for you to start protecting better your home fast and easy.

Conclusion

Think about how important is to hide your camera nowadays. A perfect location will give you the best insights of your home and any intruder will be recorded at maximum quality. Not even the best surveillance services will know the best locations in your home better than you. And if you do it by yourself,  you will save good money!
